About SBFD

The Submarine Base Fire Department is comprised of 1 Fire Chief, 1 Battalion Chief of Training/Prevention, 3 Fire Inspectors, 2 Shift Assistant Chiefs, 6 Captains and 32 Firefighters manning 2 engines, 1 truck, 1 BLS ambulance and the shift Assistant  Chief.  The minimum manning is 15 members on duty, anything above that will place C-12 in service which serves as the second due engine out of HQ.  Our operating frequency is 142.2000.

Currently the department operates out of two firehouses; HQ on lower base and Station 2 which is in housing.  HQ houses 2 Engines, 1 Truck, 1 BLS front line ambulance and 1 BLS reserve ambulance, the Shift Commander, Haz-Mat Unit, Light Duty Rescue, Mobile Decon Trailer and a Haz-Mat Trailer.  Station 2 houses one front line engine and one reserve engine.

The Submarine Base Fire Department Hazardous Materials Team is part of the C.E.R.R.I.T. which responds to all hazardous materials incidents in Southeastern Connecticut with a minimum of four NFPA 472 certified technicians.  Also the department responds as the F.A.S.T. for Galesferry/Ledyard, Groton City, Old Mystic/Mystic, New London & Waterford. 

In 2009, the department responded to just over 2000 calls, an increase of 400 calls from the previous year.   

Staffing Levels:

Engine Company: 1 Captain & 3 Firefighters

Ladder Company: 1 Captain & 3 Firefighters

Hazardous Materials Company: Crossed-staffed by ladder company

Ambulance: 2 Firefighters 

All SBFF's are certified at a very minimum with:

Firefighter 1 & 2

State of Connecticut EMT

Driver/Operator Aerial & Pumper

Hazardous Material Technician (NFPA 472)

Various DoD Mandated classes including Shipboard, RADCON, EVOC & NIMS

Radio Call Signs

C1 - Chief of Department

C10 - Assistant Chief/Shift Commander

C11 - First Due Engine out of HQ

C12 - Second Due Engine out of HQ

C15 - Ladder Company

C16 - Service Vehicle

C17 - Light Duty Rescue (Carries Confined Space Equipment)

C20 - Battalion Chief of Training/Prevention

C21 - Engine at Station 2

C25 - Reserve Engine

C26 - Hazardous Materials Company

C37 - Fire Inspector
